Question 1

Is Verity worth watching?

Accepted Answer

If you like dark, twisty adult thrillers, yes. I gave it an 8.5 out of 10. The first half is the best part, and Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson are both excellent. The last stretch felt a little predictable to me, and critics were split, landing in the mid 40s on Rotten Tomatoes when I checked.

Question 2

How long is the Verity movie?

Accepted Answer

The official runtime is 1 hour 54 minutes, and the AMC app lists 1 hour 56 minutes. At my 7 p.m. showing, the movie started around 7:24 p.m. after the trailers, and I walked out between 9:15 and 9:20 p.m. after the credits. There's no post-credits scene, so you don't have to stay for them.

Question 3

What age rating is Verity?

Accepted Answer

Verity is rated R for sexual content, some nudity, language, violence and bloody images. My own take is that it's a 17 and up movie, made mostly for adults who read the book.

Question 4

Is Verity scary?

Accepted Answer

It's more creepy than scary. I'd call it a 2 out of 5. There are two or three moments that made me jump, spread out across the movie and starting with one early on, but it's a psychological thriller, not a horror movie, and it didn't follow me home.

Question 5

Is Verity a horror movie or a thriller?

Accepted Answer

It's a psychological thriller, not horror. I don't watch horror, and I'd call Verity a 2 out of 5 on my scare scale. There are two or three jump moments and a creepy house, but no ghosts, monsters or supernatural stuff.

Question 6

Is Verity appropriate for teenagers?

Accepted Answer

It's rated R for sexual content, some nudity, language, violence and bloody images. There are three or four sex scenes, a very bloody injury to a child and a violent stretch near the end. I'd save it for older teens, 17 and up, and I wouldn't watch it with a younger kid in the room.

Question 7

Is Verity appropriate for a 12 year old?

Accepted Answer

I wouldn't take a 12 year old. It's rated R, with three or four sex scenes, a very bloody injury involving a child, and a tense, violent stretch near the end. If a younger teen is a big fan of the book, watch the trailer together first, but my honest answer is to wait.

Question 8

Is there nudity in Verity?

Accepted Answer

A little, but less than the R rating suggests. Neither Anne Hathaway nor Dakota Johnson shows her breasts, and the bathtub scene is covered by bubbles. The three or four sex scenes are clear about what's happening without being graphic, but I still wouldn't watch it with a younger teen.

Question 9

How spicy is the Verity movie?

Accepted Answer

Less spicy than the R rating suggests, but not tame. There are three or four sex scenes, not super graphic, and one of them is a big part of the story. The nudity is brief and mostly covered, and neither Anne Hathaway nor Dakota Johnson shows her breasts.

Question 10

Is the Verity movie the same as the book?

Accepted Answer

Mostly, yes. The setup and the big beats follow Colleen Hoover's novel closely. A few details are changed, including the accident in the opening scene, and if you've read the book, the ending is handled differently. I won't say how.

Question 11

Why did some people not like the Verity movie?

Accepted Answer

Critics were harder on it than I was. When I checked in opening week it was in the mid 40s on Rotten Tomatoes, and a lot of the complaints were about the source material more than the performances. My own gripe is smaller: the last stretch felt a little predictable to me. I still gave it an 8.5 out of 10 because the acting and the first half carried it.

Question 12

Does an animal die in Verity?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but it's quick and you don't see it. Early in the movie, a pigeon gets hit by a car on a New York street. You only hear it and see blood splash onto Lowen. There are no dogs or other pets in the movie.

Question 13

Does Verity have a post-credits scene?

Accepted Answer

No. There's no scene during or after the credits, so you can leave as soon as the movie ends. It runs 1 hour 54 minutes.
