There is nothing quite like waking up in the morning, unzipping your tent with a hot mug in hand, and having the wide-open Pacific Ocean right in front of you. No crowds blocking the view, just waves breaking over the rocks twenty feet away.
That exact oceanfront dream was what brought us to Hobson Beach Campground over Memorial Day weekend in late May. Because beach campsites in Southern California book up months in advance, we could not get the same spot for two nights in a row. So, we decided to book two different sites back-to-back.
Packing up the tent, folding chairs, and three pups to move across the park midway through our stay took some effort, but it gave us a real feel for both sides of the campground.

On our first night, we camped right along the rocky seawall.

- The vibe: You lose that wide-open waterline right at your tent door, but the campground is so small and cozy that you still see the palm trees and hear the waves clearly throughout the night.
- The trade-off: You are closer to the campground loop road, but your site is much more protected from strong evening ocean gusts.

Hobson Beach Park is tucked right along the Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County, sitting right on the waterline between the highway and the ocean. It is easy to spot from the road with its row of tall palm trees greeting you as you pull in.

Facilities and Prices
The park offers clean flush toilets, hot-water coin showers, Wi-Fi, picnic tables, fire pits, and an RV dump station. Campsite prices vary depending on whether you choose a basic tent space or a full-hookup RV pad
Beach Access and Tides
The shoreline directly in front of the camp is lined with large rock barriers. At low tide, you will find small pockets of sand below the rocks to walk on. At high tide, the water comes right up against the seawall, making the surf sound incredible.
The Real Noise Situation
Highway 1 (PCH) and an active train track run right behind the campground, so you will hear passing traffic and occasional trains during the day. But once evening comes and traffic settles down, the constant rhythm of the waves acts like natural white noise and softens the highway sounds.
The Famous Hobson Park Store & Burger Shack
Right near the front entrance is a cute little food counter. On our checkout morning, a friendly local gentleman drove in solely to order lunch, telling us they make some of the best burgers in Ventura County. We were already full from our camp breakfast so we could not try one that morning, but it is at the very top of our list for our next stay.

If you book a direct oceanfront site (sites 8 to 14), standard lightweight tent stakes will not cut it in the loose gravel and coastal breeze. Bring heavy-duty steel stakes or screw-in ground anchors to keep your setup locked down against afternoon gusts.
Also, Pacific salt spray settles fast overnight. Wipe down your tent zippers, camp stove, and metal gear with fresh water before packing up to prevent rust and corrosion. If you are camping with dogs, rinse or wipe their paws before bed so they do not track damp coastal salt into their sleeping pads.
